About A'DAM Lookout
A'DAM Lookout occupies the top floor of the A'DAM Tower (formerly the Shell building) on Amsterdam-Noord's waterfront, directly across the IJ waterway from Amsterdam Centraal. At 22 storeys, it is the highest rooftop observation deck in Amsterdam and offers an unobstructed 360-degree view across the city, the IJ, and on clear days out to the flat Dutch countryside beyond.
The tower opened as an entertainment complex in 2016 and has become one of Amsterdam's most talked-about attractions — partly for the views, and partly for the “Over the Edge” swing, which dangles visitors over the edge of the building at 100 metres.
The Over the Edge Swing
This is the main draw for many visitors: a double-seat swing suspended from the roof of the building that swings out over the edge at a height of 100 metres. The ride lasts approximately 3 minutes and is genuinely exhilarating — the view as you swing out over the IJ waterway is remarkable. It costs €5 extra on top of the observation deck ticket and is available for ages 12+ (minimum height 1.40m).
Queues for the swing can be long on busy days (30–60 minutes). If you want to do it, consider a timed-slot booking via the app when you arrive.
What Else is in the Tower
- The observation deck: Open-air terrace with binoculars and interactive screens showing what you're looking at. Multiple cameras and sightlines give views across the entire city.
- Madam restaurant: A revolving restaurant on a lower floor — one complete rotation per 90 minutes. Dinner reservation recommended; lunch walk-ins usually available.
- The rooftop bar: Open in summer, with cocktails and the same view as the observation deck. A more relaxed way to take in the panorama if you don't want to pay the observation deck fee.

Getting There: The Free Ferry
One of Amsterdam's best-kept secrets: the free GVB ferries behind Amsterdam Centraal run 24 hours a day and cross the IJ waterway in about 2 minutes. Take the ferry to Buiksloterweg — the A'DAM Tower is visible immediately from the dock. The ferries also run bicycles across, making this a very easy excursion even on a bike.
Tips
- Book tickets online to avoid queues at the entrance desk.
- The observation deck is uncovered in parts — bring a jacket on windy days. Amsterdam can be breezy at 100 metres even in summer.
- Combined observation deck + swing tickets save a couple of euros compared to buying separately.
- After your visit, explore Amsterdam-Noord — it has become the city's most creative neighbourhood with excellent street art, independent cafés (EYE Film Institute café is excellent), and the NDSM Wharf arts complex.
