Before You Go

1. Book Museum Tickets in Advance

The Anne Frank House sells out weeks ahead. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum have 90-minute queues in summer. Always book online before you travel.

2. Consider the I Amsterdam City Card

The I Amsterdam City Card gives free entry to 80+ museums, unlimited public transport, and a free canal cruise. Worth it for museum-heavy visitors staying 2+ days.

Getting Around

3. Rent a Bike

Amsterdam is the world’s most bike-friendly city. Renting a bike (€10–15/day) is cheap, fun, and the fastest way to get around. Watch for tram tracks — they can catch narrow bike tyres.

4. The Free Ferry is Worth Taking

The GVB ferry from behind Centraal Station to Noord is free, runs 24/7, and takes you to the A’DAM Lookout Tower in 2 minutes.

🚴 Bike Safety: Always lock both the frame and wheel to a fixed object. Use the lock provided and consider a second chain lock — bike theft is common.

Money & Costs

5. Amsterdam is Expensive — Budget Accordingly

Expect €80–120/day on a mid-range budget (excluding accommodation). Book accommodation early — good central hotels sell out months ahead, especially in April–August.

6. Eat Away from the Tourists

The Damrak and Leidseplein are tourist traps for food. Head to De Pijp or the Jordaan for better food at lower prices.

Practical Tips

7. Respect the Bike Lanes

Never walk in the red bike lanes — they’re a dedicated traffic lane. Stepping into one without looking is genuinely dangerous.

8. The Weather Changes Fast

Always carry a compact waterproof jacket. Amsterdam’s weather can shift from sunny to showery and back within an hour.

9. Book Accommodation Early

Check Booking.com and compare prices early — good central hotels sell out months ahead in summer.

10. Speak English Freely

Over 90% of Amsterdammers speak excellent English. You’ll rarely need a phrasebook.
