Amsterdam's Climate at a Glance
Amsterdam has a temperate maritime climate — mild temperatures year-round, frequent cloud cover, and rain that can appear at any time. The city rarely sees extreme heat or cold, making it viable in any month.
Spring (March–May)
Spring is Amsterdam’s most popular season. Temperatures climb from 8°C in March to 17°C by May. Most famously, Keukenhof Gardens opens (late March to mid-May) with over 7 million tulips in bloom.
Summer (June–August)
Warmest and busiest period. Temperatures average 20–23°C, daylight stretches until nearly 22:00, and the canal cruises are at their most vibrant. Book museum tickets months in advance.
Autumn (September–November)
September is Amsterdam’s best-kept secret. Summer crowds thin, prices drop, and the city takes on a misty, cinematic quality. Museum queues shorten considerably.
Winter (December–February)
Cold (3–7°C) but atmospheric. The Amsterdam Light Festival (Nov–Jan) transforms the canals with large-scale light installations. Hotel prices drop significantly and museum queues are minimal.
