About Moco Museum

Moco Museum (Modern Contemporary Museum) opened in 2016 in a beautiful 1904 villa on Museumplein, directly opposite the Rijksmuseum. It has quickly become one of Amsterdam's most popular museums, with a focus on modern and contemporary art that deliberately contrasts with the classical Old Masters in the surrounding museum district.

The permanent collection centres on two pillars: a substantial collection of Banksy works (the largest permanent Banksy exhibition in the world) and a growing Salvador Dalí collection. Temporary exhibitions have featured Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Frida Kahlo, and major immersive digital art installations.

💡 Book Ahead: Moco is one of Amsterdam's most-visited museums and operates strict timed-entry. Book online at mocomuseum.com — typically 2–5 days in advance is sufficient outside peak season, but book earlier in summer and school holidays.

What to See

Banksy

The Banksy collection is spread across multiple rooms and covers the full range of the artist's work: original canvases, large-format prints, sculpture, and video installations. Key works include Girl with Balloon (the most reproduced Banksy image), Love is in the Bin (the self-shredding canvas that became famous at Sotheby's in 2018), Toxic Mary, and Crude Oil.

Whether you know Banksy's work or are encountering it for the first time, the collection provides excellent context about the artist's political commentary, technique, and evolution as a practitioner. The wall text is unusually informative for a contemporary art museum.

Salvador Dalí

The Dalí collection focuses on sculpture and prints rather than paintings, featuring bronze works, graphic series, and several of his most famous images in large-format reproduction. The juxtaposition with Banksy is intentional — both artists are provocateurs interested in subverting mainstream culture and perception.

Temporary and Immersive Exhibitions

Moco regularly adds temporary exhibitions that have become major draws in their own right. The “Beyond Banksy” and immersive digital art shows have been particularly successful. Check mocomuseum.com for current programming.

  • Photography is permitted throughout, but tripods and selfie sticks are not.
  • The museum is especially popular with younger visitors and is genuinely engaging for teenagers who might find classical museums less accessible.
  • Combine with the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum for a full Museumplein day — the contrast between Golden Age painting, post-Impressionism, and contemporary street art makes for a rich cultural experience.
